Diversifying The Lifeguard Applicant Pool

Competitive swimming is still a predominantly white sport. A study released in 2010 by USA Swimming and the University of Memphis found minorities reported lower swimming ability compared to whites.

Becky Hulett, who supervises Aquatics for the City of Phoenix, said groups across the country are worried about how to broaden interest in swimming, and the lack of lifeguards from different backgrounds.

Democratic Rep. Diana DeGette, a lead sponsor of the federal ban on personal defense-capacity magazines showed a Denver Post forum she doesn’t have a clue as to what it is she wants to ban, and the “clarifying” statement made by her spokeswoman served to confirm the ignorance of both women.

“I will tell you these are ammunition, they’re bullets, so the people who have those now they’re going to shoot them, so if you ban them in the future, the number of these high capacity magazines is going to decrease dramatically over time because the bullets will have been shot and there won’t be any more available,” DeGette claimed when asked how a ban would help reduce violence committed with firearms.

Worse than the Great Depression: Mass Unemployment, 100 Million Americans Live in Poverty

Workers in the United States are in a very difficult situation—one made significantly worse by the Great Recession and the very slow “recovery.” The latest data as we write this (available for January 2013) indicates that although the unemployment rate has declined from its peak and is now at 7.9 percent, when those working part time but wanting full-time jobs and those who have given up looking for work are added in, 14.4 percent of the labor force currently needs full-time employment.1

To give some idea of the meaning of such a large percentage needing full-time jobs, this represents 22 million people, compared to total nonfarm private-sector employment of about 113 million. Given the large portion of workers in part-time positions, there are currently less than 100 million full-time-equivalent jobs left in the private sector.2 With the public sector hiring few if any workers for the foreseeable future, and no New Deal-type works program in the cards, the private sector will be the source of whatever job increases occur.

Gov. Beshear Allows Hemp Bill to Become Law

The bottom line is that Senate Bill 50 won’t allow industrial hemp to be grown or sold unless and until the federal government takes the very big step of legalizing the crop in some way. If that happens, we will have time to work with the legislature and law enforcement to make any further changes necessary to ensure the public’s safety and alleviate those concerns.

UN passes historic arms trade treaty by huge majority

Russia and China, some of the world's biggest exporters, were among those who abstained from the vote in New York.

The treaty prohibits states from exporting conventional weapons in violation of arms embargoes, or weapons that would be used for acts of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes or terrorism.

It also requires states to prevent conventional weapons reaching the black market.

Mississippi open carry law goes into effect July 1

The author of the legislation Rep. Andy Gipson of Braxton says it simply makes clear what has been the law of the state since the 1890 constitution was approved.

"In the 28 states which have this open carry already, have not had any problems with it," said Gipson. "In fact they have seen crime go down. Because the bad guys already have guns, and this bill allows the good law abiding citizens to carry guns in a way that would protect themselves, their families and their property."

Poll: Almost One Third of Americans Believe in New World Order

A survey conducted by Public Policy Polling, labeled by many as a pro-Obama outfit, seems to be aimed at ascribing belief in “crazy conspiracy theories” to Republicans by mixing in real cover-ups and conspiracies with outlandish ideas.

However, despite the constant media drumbeat about the clear move towards centralization of power being a baseless conspiracy theory, the poll reveals that 28 per cent of Americans believe that “a secretive power elite with a globalist agenda is conspiring to eventually rule the world through an authoritarian world government, or New World Order.”

- Not all 'conspiracies' are true. There is much intentional disinformation designed to distract.

In a free country there’s no such thing as a group whose motives cannot be questioned.

First, the various states that opposed the new healthcare law from the start announced their intention to refuse to implement significant portions of the program, such as creating state healthcare exchanges for those who cannot afford to purchase health insurance. Then, many corporations in the healthcare industry began to protest the tax that Obamacare places on medical devices, such as hip replacements, knees, pacemakers, artery stents, and implants.

The complaints were heard all the way to the halls of Congress, and the House voted to repeal the tax on the devices. But then, to everyone's surprise, the Democrat-controlled Senate also voted to repeal. Seventy-nine senators, including two dozen Democrats, voted with Republicans to ditch the tax.

Pagan 'Gate to Hell' unearthed in Turkey ruins by Italian archaeologist

On Monday, April 1, over on Fox News a science and tech magazine, "The Geek Sheet," is abuzz with news: Italian archaeologists have revealed their discovery of a "Gate to Hell" in Turkey. The portal to the underworld, believed to have been fully in use until the 4th century AD, was known in ancient mythology as Pluto's gate of Plutonium.

It is a cave described as filled with "lethal vapors," which historians have long theorized as located in the Phrygian city of Hierapolis, presently called Pamukkale. Hierapolis is one of the major Christian archaeological sites in Turkey.

Global-warming Computer Models Fail as Temps Remain Stable

“If climate scientists were credit-rating agencies,” the environment editor for Australia's largest newspaper quipped March 30, “then climate sensitivity — the way climate reacts to changes in carbon-dioxide levels — would be on negative watch but not yet downgraded.” The Australian for March 30 concluded that “the fact that global surface temperatures have not followed the expected global warming pattern is now widely accepted.”

The Australian was reacting to an article published the same day in the British magazine The Economist, which quoted David Whitehouse of the pro-regulatory Global Warming Policy Foundation as admitting that “If we have not passed it already, we are on the threshold of global observations becoming incompatible with the consensus theory of climate change." Whitehouse's statement means that even the hyper-regulatory zealots are now admitting their apocalyptic models are exaggerated

China and Australia to launch direct currency trading

China and Australia will launch direct trading between the two currencies in Shanghai and Sydney within weeks to lower trade transaction costs, a foreign bank source with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Wednesday.

The new currency deal will eliminate the spread between U.S. dollars and Australian dollars from the cost of converting between the yuan and the Aussie dollar.

Connecticut Lawmakers to Infringe Further on Citizens’ Gun Rights

On Monday afternoon, lawmakers in Connecticut announced success in molding a bi-partisan approach to gun violence following weeks of closed-door negotiations. It will be voted upon on Wednesday, and is expected to pass the Democrat-controlled General Assembly with ease.

RRather than focus on improving security at schools, lawmakers instead turned their attention to the firearms used in recent shootings, concluding that certain features of those firearms enhanced the ability of deranged shooters to kill unarmed innocents.

A huge victory was earned for SAF on February 22nd when the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals let stand a December ruling by a three-judge panel of the court that forces Illinois to adopt a concealed carry law. Now Illinois lawmakers have about 150 days to pass a law that will impose reasonable limitations consistent with the public safety and the Second Amendment.

We currently have over 20 open court cases we are involved in and it is our goal to earn a victory for each and every one of them. Our legal action ranges from lawsuits against cities, states, our Attorney General Eric Holder, and the challenge of certain rulings that violate our Second Amendment rights.

US is still paying Civil War benefits

That view has received some resistance from the other side of the aisle, however. Former Republican Sen. Alan Simpson -- who co-chaired President Barack Obama's deficit committee in 2010 -- says lawmakers looking to tamp down federal debt shouldn't consider survivor benefits off-limits. He insists that recipients should receive such payments based solely on need and that "without question, I would affluence-test all of those people."

Perhaps he would start with two elderly children of Civil War veterans in North Carolina and Tennessee. Though born in the 1920s and 1930s, the two recipients in question were fathered by Civil War veterans in their 70s and 80s (not an uncommon occurrence, especially in the veterans community). Those the two offspring still receive $876 a year in benefits. Such survivor payouts usually end by the time children turn 18, but those born with disabilities rendering them incapable of caring for themselves are covered for life.

Elizabeth Mais wanted to order her husband Bill an AR-15 crafted cake for his 51st birthday, but she was turned down by a number of local bakers who didn’t approve of her idea. Determined to find someone to create the highly detailed dessert, Mais came across Montalto who said she had no problem creating the sporting rifle cake with a ‘Don’t Tread on Me’ flag draped on top. “I don’t think about politics when I’m doing my cakes,” she said Tuesday. “A friend contacted me about it because they couldn’t find anyone to make it… It was a challenge.”

After creating the cake Montalto received some hate online via Facebook and Yelp reviews (which have since been removed). She was labeled “insensitive” and guilty of “ridiculing the tragedy in Newtown.”

Man Faces Charges for Shooting Buck in Walmart Parking Lot

Bianco chased the deer across the parking lot, firing shots as he went. The buck finally went down past a nearby highway, where the man retrieved the animal and transported it to a meat processor. His unique style of “hunting” did not go unnoticed, surveillance cameras picked up the enitre incident on video. Bianco is being formally charged with hunting without a license, shooting across a roadway, unlawful taking of big game and reckless endangerment with possibly more charges to come. A preliminary hearing is set to take place in May.

The saddest part?

“It was the nicest buck I’ve seen taken in Indiana County in a couple of years,” said Officer Lucas.

Nazis raid YouTube vid maker

U.S. Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents supervised the raid geared at finding explosives used by Kyle Myers, 26, because the ATF believes Myers may be violating a federal law regulating such explosives, according to ATF spokesman Richard Coes.

Federal agents, accompanied by Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents and deputies with the sheriff’s offices in Franklin and Hart counties, raided the Royston residence of Myers. Authorities also raided on Tuesday the 60-acre farm of Lamar Myers, Kyle’s father, in Lavonia.

Rand Paul’s Important Concession On Guns

The only way we can truly be safe and prevent further gun violence is to ban civilian ownership of all guns. That means everything. No pistols, no revolvers, no semiautomatic or automatic rifles. Some states are also coming up with common-sense approaches to dealing with school safety. South Dakota, for example, just passed a law allowing teachers and faculty to carry firearms on campus to defend themselves and their students if the need should ever arise. Supporters of the measure noted that virtually every mass shooting in America has happened in a so-called “gun-free zone,” which analysts have called “magnets” for would-be killers.

Of course, the president’s family, banks, government facilities, celebrities, mayors like Bloomberg, and other “important” people are all protected with firearms. Supporters of abolishing deadly “gun-free zones” wonder why American children, by contrast, must be “protected” only by ineffective signs advertising the fact that everyone in the vicinity is unarmed. There are currently at least two bills in the U.S. House of Representatives to repeal the controversial federal statute.

Billionaire Bloomy: ‘I’ll buy the NRA today!’

Unable to beat the National Rifle Association, billionaire anti-gun New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced he has decided to purchase the organization trigger lock, synthetic stock and chrome-lined barrel rather than spend another dime on gun control advertisements.

“I came up with the idea over the weekend as I was chugging down a gallon of cold root beer,” Bloomberg stated.

- Maybe he could by Australia while he's at it, then move there.
