Wil-e coyote not so wiley...
Heard him singing or howling a little after daylight this morning(Oct. 16). Was amazed he stood still so long in broad daylight. Most of them around here are too smart for that nowadays. I shot him from my kitchen doorway from about 200 yards with a .270.
Coyotes predate small mammals to include cats and small dogs. A neighbor lost a small squirrel dog to one a while back. I'm pretty sure they've accounted for a few of my cats. They sing nightly around here and I'm sure there are several. Kentucky has had them since the 80s.
A nuisance animal remover told me the pelt isn't worth anything because it's too early in the season. The inside of its hide would have a blue color. The pelts don't have much value now because of the economy's affect on the Russian and Chinese fur markets where most of the American pelts apparently go. We can probably also thank the animals rights Nazis for that.
Well this one won't breed, at least not anymore. He might have been this year's pup since he wasn't very large. But he was grown and looked more red than I was able to make him appear with Photoshop. They have a peculiar smell, in fact they stink especially when skinning them. My Norwegian Elkhound smelled almost like them at times. I had a couple hides tanned years back when I killed a male and female at the same time. They were more red than this one. Some of them can be almost black. Most are grayish black from a distance.
The nuisance animal remover told me they have 3-5 pups at a time and the pups stay with the mother for about a year. This is probably the only time they run in a 'pack.' Yet he said some farmers are convinced they predate their calves when it's probably stray or feral dogs. Setting snares for them is part of how he makes his living.
Some places offer bounties on coyotes but there doesn't seem to be one locally. Marion County used to have one years ago. Outdoor Life magazine reported in an article years back that if a concerted effort were made to wipe them out it would take 50 years because of they way they reproduce. Apparently they produce more pups when their numbers go down. One article I read a while back said about 25 percent of coyotes have red wolf genes. The red wolf is the eastern version of the western gray wolf.
