A former juvenile court judge was convicted Friday of racketeering in a case
that accused him of sending youth offenders to for-profit detention centers
in exchange for millions of dollars in illicit payments from the builder and
owner of the lockups.
Luzerne County ex-Judge Mark Ciavarella, 61, left the bench in disgrace two
years ago after prosecutors charged him with engineering one of the biggest
courtroom frauds in U.S. history by using juvenile delinquents as pawns in a
plot to get rich.

Mexico wants to sue U.S. gun makers
CBS News has learned that the Mexican Government has retained an American
law firm to explore filing civil charges against U.S. gun manufacturers and
distributors over the flood of guns crossing the border into Mexico.
Sources say Mexico's frustration with U.S. efforts to stop the flow of
weapons has pushed them into this novel approach. The law firm is looking at
charges that may include civil RICO. The contract was signed on November 2,
2010 by a representative of Mexico's Attorney General, at their Washington
embassy.

Michigan: Police Search Cell Phones During Traffic Stops
The Michigan State Police have a high-tech mobile forensics device that can
be used to extract information from cell phones belonging to motorists
stopped for minor traffic violations. The American Civil Liberties Union
(ACLU) of Michigan last Wednesday demanded that state officials stop
stonewalling freedom of information requests for information on the program.
ACLU learned that the police had acquired the cell phone scanning devices
and in August 2008 filed an official request for records on the program,
including logs of how the devices were used. The state police responded by
saying they would provide the information only in return for a payment of
$544,680. The ACLU found the charge outrageous.

Hosts of US Border Officials Refuse to Apprehend Illegals
An Arizona sheriff says he has been flooded with calls and emails of support from local and federal agents who back his claims that the U.S. Border Patrol has effectively ordered them to stop apprehending illegal immigrants crossing the U.S.-Mexican border.

Damning New Study: Eco Bulbs Cause Cancer
A damning new study conducted by German scientists has found that so-called energy saving light bulbs contain poisonous carcinogens that could cause cancer and should be “kept as far away as possible from the human environment,” but Americans will be forced to replace their traditional light bulbs with toxic CFLs ahead of a government ban set to take effect at the start of next year.

Drive grows for states to recognize ‘personhood’
Mississippi voters are likely to be the first in the nation to add to their
state constitution "personhood" language that declares unborn children to be
persons, effectively outlawing abortion and setting up a potential Supreme
Court showdown — if they get a chance to vote on it in November.
On June 6, the Mississippi Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments
in a pre-emptive court challenge against Measure 26, a ballot question that
would define a person as a "human being from the moment of fertilization."
--- While I believe that from a biological standpoint abortion is murder since a fertilized egg, attached to the uterus, is an undeveloped human being, I don't get the religious argument. Most mainstream Christians, at least in the church I was raised in, believe that once a child gets to the 'age of accountability' which can be as young as 5, since some famous preachers have claimed to have been 'saved' that young, the child is liable to be burned alive in fire forever for 'rejecting god.' So any child who dies before that age gets a free ticket to heaven regardless of what he or she might have done later in life. Of course the Catholics and others 'baptize' them at birth, as if the infant is capable of making a decision. Which begs the question: Does an aborted or stillborn baby go to hell? Here's a quote from the Wikipedia page I linked to: The Roman Catholic Church considers baptism, even for an infant, so important that "parents are obliged to see that their infants are baptised within the first few weeks" and, "if the infant is in danger of death, it is to be baptised without any delay."

Obama Claims Air Pollution from Coal ‘Creating Asthma for Kids Nearby’
President Barack Obama claimed that coal could create "the kinds of air
pollution" that is "creating asthma for kids," in speaking at a town hall
event in Annandale, Va., on Tuesday. However, the National Institutes of
Health says that “the exact cause of asthma isn’t known” and that “asthma is
different for each person.”
“The challenge with coal is that although it’s very cheap, it’s also dirty.
And it can create the kinds of air pollution that not only is contributing
to climate change but is also creating asthma for kids nearby,” Obama said
in answer to a question about balancing deficit reduction with government
spending on clean energy.

Illinois Senate seat after his main rival, Jack Ryan, dropped out of the

once-promising candidacy to implode in four short days have given Obama a
clear lead as Republicans struggled to fetch an alternative.

Action Alert: Oppose Patriot Act, Round Five
Currently there are nine different bills introduced in Congress, three in
the House and six in the Senate, that would extend certain provisions of the
Patriot Act for one to three years.
Four of the Senate bills are already out of committee and scheduled for a
vote on the General Calendar. One that sees much press but has no
co-sponsors is Sen. Patrick Leahy’s (D-Vt.) S. 193: USA PATRIOT Act Sunset
Extension Act of 2011, and is a likely vehicle for furthering the dictates
of the original Patriot Act.
All of the proposed measures would extend the most objectionable parts of
the Patriot Act; the “lone wolf” provision that permits indiscriminate
government surveillance of individuals for no reason; the “library records”
provision; and the “John Doe roving wiretap” provision that ignores the
Fourth Amendment’s guarantee of probable cause and proper court order.

Feds to Supreme Court: Allow Warrantless GPS Monitoring
The Obama administration is urging the Supreme Court to allow the
government, without a court warrant, to affix GPS devices on suspects’
vehicles to track their every move.
The Justice Department, saying “a person has no reasonable expectation of
privacy in his movements (.pdf) from one place to another,” is demanding the
justices undo a lower court decision that reversed the conviction and life
sentence of a cocaine dealer whose vehicle was tracked via GPS for a month
without a court warrant.
The petition, if accepted by the justices, arguably would make it the
biggest Fourth Amendment case in a decade — one weighing the collision of
privacy, technology and the Constitution.

WSJ: US to Sell GM Stake at $11 Billion Loss
The government plans to sell most of its remaining stake in General Motors
in the coming months and lose $11 billion in the process, The Wall Street
Journal reports.
With taxpayer money, the government rescued General Motors for $50 billion
in 2009
To get that money back, the U.S. Treasury will need to sell its remaining
stake of around 500 million shares at $53 apiece.
